When I was a young girl I fell in love with the book The Secret Garden. The main character of this story, Mary Lennox, uses love, hope and faith to bring an abandoned garden back to life.

Just like the seeds that Mary’s friend Dickon gives her, this book planted a desire in my heart that took many years to grow. You see, Mary spends the first years of her life and the beginning of the book, in India. It took seeing photographs of the people suffering in India to uncover my desire to go to Mary’s childhood home.

I am so excited to tell you that I have the opportunity to share the love, the hope and the faith I have with the people of rural south India, this summer as part of Zarephath Christian Church’s 2010 India Missions Team.

My team and I are scheduled to depart from New Jersey on July 28th and return home on August 8th. Our work there will include:

• Children’s activities with approximately 350 children at 2 large rural children’s homes

• Food distribution to the poor and AIDS-affected families

• Work at a home for AIDS-affected children

• Visits to homes for elderly, the leprosy colony, and the school for handicapped children

• Community outreach

• Medical assistance at rural health clinics

I, personally, will be developing a skit to perform for the children. This, of course, is going to be difficult because of the language barrier. However, I am excited by this unique challenge.

We will also be taking pictures of the children, many of whom have never seen their own face, let alone had their picture taken. We will be using these pictures as a gift to the children and we’ll be bringing them back to the States with the hope of getting each child sponsored.

As you can see, there is much to do and a lot of preparation. The team will greatly appreciate your prayer support.
